Sony's Playstation is the best selling games console of the moment. And best of all, you can stand it on it's end!! Well worth the money alone.
OK, so maybe that's not the best reason. You can however buy an awfull lot of games for the PS2, many of which are cheap now! (look at www.play.com for some cheap games).

You can also get quite a lot of different hardware for it which is discussed here.
Gran Turismo 3
Gran Turismo 3(GT3) for the Playsation 2 (the reason I bought a Playstaion 2) is amazing.

I could leave it there as it just about sums up the game. There are lots of reviews out there on the net about this game and each one has a little niggle, "the menus aren't right" "the number of cars is less than GT2", but I challenge you to find a more involving, realistic and huge game as this.

Colin Mcrae 3
Colin Mcrae 3 is a rally game for the PS2 (and other consoles as well). It works with the steering wheel I have for the PS2 including the force feedback.
There are supposedly loads of cars to unlock on the game, but all I've managfed so far is another Focus. Probably due to the fact that I only tend to play it when I'm drinking (never helps).
The Getaway
The Getaway was a bit of a random purchase really, but I'm really pleased I did buy it. This is the biggest game I have ever seen!
The map for the game is pretty much the inside of the circle line in London, apparently 40 km2. The famous London landmarks are instantly recognisable.
The game is basically "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" only more violent (not really one for the kiddies!). Your son has been kidnapped and this gangster has murdered your wife and the police think you did it. So you have to carry out a load of mission or he'll kill your son.
You have to drive to the destination of the mission which usually involves fending of the Police, armed with stingers and of course guns, Triads and who ever else might fancy taking pop shots at you. You can drive anything you can get to and anywhere you like.

StarCraft : Ghost
Out February 2004 for PS2, XBOX and GameCube StarCraft : Ghost (SCG) takes the ghost character from the original StarCraft world and places her in a first person environment.

The Ghost, Nova, has to fight the other characters from the original game, but instead of being in a strategy scenario, this is up close and personal!

From all the information and trailers of the game that I have seen, this looks great! As a big fan of StarCraft I'm very much looking forward to getting my mits on a copy.
StarCraft and it's follow-up expansion pack, Brood Wars, is available on PC and Mac for about £7 (for both). It's one of my favourite games and has still got a large online community playing it (even though it was first released in 1997).

Links about the game: Update

StarCraft Ghost has been dropped for all but the GameCube. Blizzard's website hasn't been updated for ages. This is a real shame as I was looking forward to this in a big way!

GT4

GT4 or GranTurismo 4 was released for the playstation in the UK in April/May. It's not immediately obvios how different it is from GT3 but it is! The graphics overall are better and whilst some of the courses have been carried over from GT3, they are improved. The new courses are for me one of the big plusses. I've spent a fair chunk of time driving round the Nurburgring in arcade mode in a Lotus (no surpruse there then!). I hadn't really appreciated just how big that circuit is, it takes me well over 9 minutes (I expect that's quite slow compared to others) to get round!
