If you do have two machines and you want to connect them, here's how to do it cheaply.
Get yourself a network card for each machine (about £5 from www.scan.co.uk) and a basic patch cable.
Then cut the patch cable and join the wires as shown in the table below: |  |

| Blue | to | Brown with White tracer |
| Blue with White tracer | to | Brown |

Make sure you have it right, or it won't work. It took me two go's to get it right (soldering irob in the garage with hardly any light didn't help at all!!).
I can't gaurantee it will work, but it did me fine until I got a hub from Scan (8 port 10/100 for about £35).
When you do have your networked computers working, not only can you share files and printers between them, you can play games!! I highly recommned Unreal Tournament. If you can get a hub and about 3 or 4 mates round, you can have a superb multiplayer death match!
